“Outlaw” or Bandida: A Número Um (2024) is a Brazilian crime drama film directed by João Wainer. In the very center is Rebeca, Maria Bomani is in this role, a woman who has gained authority in the drug mafia of the Rocinha, sprawled in the heart of Rio de janeiro. The sources are Raquel De Oliveira’s novels and show the story of Rebeca – from the moment, when her grandmother sells her to a gangster during her childhood.
The emotions hard pressed therein are more primal: surviving, trust betrayal and blood revenges, they allow to follow a transformation of Rebeca, – now Aumina and other in the story, – from a wounded innocent into a forceful figure in drugs landscape. Wherever she walks, amongst all manner of hate and treachery, Rebeca’s journey ends with a final battle; this time against her foes, and against the law.
“Outlaw”, has been receiving praise for the engrossing plots and hard hitting acting, complimented with a deeply engaging representation of the life in the favela as well as the underline of the drug trade. The film is, at present, being streamed on the OTT platform of Netflix.
