State of Silence

State of Silence produced in 2024 is a detail-oriented documentary of Santiago Maza that highlights the threats experienced by independent journalists in Mexico. These types of journalists live and practice their craft in “silent zones” such as those described in this chapter of narco-politics and pervasive corruption, which are extreme in nature where it is not safe to report on cartel violence, brutality by the ruling government, and human rights issues.is a significant concern.

The film tells the story of four journalists: Jesús Medina and Juan de Dios García Davish Maria de Jesus Peters and Marcos Vizcarra who are at the core of this struggle, grappling with the repercussions in doing so while helping to expose the reality. Besides executive producers Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the film explores more of the potential aggressions against press freedom in Mexico and exposes the extreme struggles that these reporters undergo on a daily basis.

The film documents and describes the rise and gradual advancement of authoritarianism through the rise and incremental development of censorship. The installation was located within the Spanish-speaking constituency lasting 79 minutes and having also English subtitles. The film also has other versions which include French additional languages out of which the Spanish was the main and shot version full length of 79 minutes.
