In the Summers (original title: Démos el Verano) is a drama film that was released in 2023 and is directed by Julio Hernández Cordón. The film follows the story of an oppressed Mexican family stuck in a poor village. In the plot, Alejandro and his family encounter interpersonal disputes and grapple with social circumstances and time in an attempt to make sense of their lives.
The plot takes place during summer, a period when things are supposed to happen and change for the better, a time for the family members to have a sense of introspection as well as extreme family feelings which can also lead to almost daily tensions. This movie touches on themes of a generation divide, things not said, and the trials and tribulations of love and grief. Sundried, and bitter reminiscences fill the undisturbed atmosphere, where the summer sun feels in their hearts as well, but what lies ahead is troubles and despair.
The film follows a minimalistic approach and is quite intimate, with attention being paid to feelings and the anatomy of relations. This is an intimate film about the family and one’s journey towards self-discovery in a rich broken culture.
In the Summers evokes positive criticism thanks to the sensitive direction as well as strong performances and is a poignantly understated reflection on life, family, and time.
